Recent USDA and IRS announcements bring farming practices into 45Z. This note is about a time-sensitive nutrient budget deadline.
Why this is urgent
Under the USDA rule, a farmer who wants a field certified low-carbon for 2027 must write and sign a nutrient budget before the first nutrient application of the crop interval, and the crop interval for 2027 corn starts the day the 2026 crop comes off – which involves any nitrogen, manure, P and K, or legume cover going on this fall. A farmer who applies fertilizer this fall without a signed nutrient budget has taken that field out of 45Z entirely for the 2027 crop, not just out of the nutrient credit.
